Women’s Basketball Throttles A&M-Kingsville

The Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball team cruised to an 87-38 home victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Dec. 1 at the Field House.

A&M-Commerce was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon as they converted on 58 percent of all shots and 42 percent of their three-pointers. The Lions forced 26 turnovers and blocked six shots as they held A&M-Kingsville to 25 percent shooting overall and just under 17 percent from beyond the arc.

Guards Chania Wright and Princess Davis were the Lions to score in double-figures during the contest with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Wright made five of her eight three-point attempts, shot 53.3 percent overall, and added four assists and three rebounds. Davis added three rebounds and seven assists, a game-high for the Lions, to go with her five layups and three free throws.

Forward Agang Tac led the Lions with eight rebounds and scored six points by making all three of her shots. Forward Jocelyn Pierce also had a perfect shooting night, adding nine points from four shots and a free throw.

The Lions’ outscored A&M-Kingsville 30-8 in fast-break points and 50-18 in the paint. They also scored 23 points off turnovers, and their bench added 38 points in another solid performance.

Both teams changed leads frequently early in the first quarter, but after Lion guard Mykiel Burleson made a layup to take a 9-8 lead, A&M-Commerce took hold of the game and would not let go. They held the Javelinas scoreless for the rest of the quarter and scored six more points of their own to end the quarter ahead 15-8.

To begin the second quarter, the Lions did not allow a score for nearly four minutes as they poured in another 10 points to cap off a 18-0 run that spanned through two quarters. They scored nine more points as the Javelinas scored six, and A&M-Commerce went into halftime with a 34-14 lead.

A&M-Commerce opened the third quarter with two layups, but the Javelinas responded with a 12-4 run. With 2:20 left in the quarter, Wright caught fire as she made five three-pointers on consecutive shots and Davis made a layup to extend the Lions’ halftime lead by 10 and head into the final frame ahead 59-29.

The Lions did not take their foot off the gas pedal in the final quarter as they shot 68.8 percent from the field and held the A&M-Kingsville to only three points until the last two minutes of the game. A&M-Commerce outscored the Javelinas 28-9 in the quarter to end the game with a resounding 87-38 victory.

The Lions move to 1-1 in conference competition and 4-4 overall with the win and will be looking forward to another home game against Northeastern State Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Field House. The two teams haven’t faced off since Jan. 22, 2011 when the Lions lost at home 50-63. Northeastern State is currently 2-5 and will play two games before their matchup with A&M-Commerce.
