The A&M-Commerce Lions soccer team fell to No. 14 West Texas A&M 2-1 on Friday night as the Lions hosted the Lady Buffaloes at Kyle Field in Rockwall.
The game was moved to Rockwall due to unplayable field conditions at the Lion soccer field with the heavy amounts of rain over the last couple of weeks.
With the loss the Lions fall to 7-6 (4-5 LSC) on the season, while West Texas A&M stays atop the Lone Star Conference at 13-1-1 (8-0-1 LSC).
The Lady Buffaloes outshot the Lions 22-9, and 8-5 on goal, but one of the shots for the Lions came from Freshman Jeorgia Carr, a Freshman from England, who scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Lindsey McDonald.
Kara Blasingame and Katie Givens got in on the action as they both had two shots on goal, but the good looks were not enough as WT saved 4 of the 5 shots on goal.
The Lions and Lady Buffs kept the score knotted at zero until the 37th minute when West Texas’ Mackenzie Taylor scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Carr scored the lone goal for the Lions in the 56th minute on a clean header after McDonald made a fantastic throw in.
Both goalies played well in the second half, but WT scored late in the game as Hannah Kelley-Lusk scored in the 73rd minute to take a 2-1 lead. That would be the final score of the game.
The Lions close the season with three straight home games as the Lions look to finish the season strong. The Lions will be back in action on Sunday as they host Eastern New Mexico at Memorial Stadium.
