Portales, NM– The No. 1 ranked A&M-Commerce Lions extended their 13-game winning streak in Portales, NM on Saturday as they defeated the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds 21-11.
The Lions used the ground game to defeat the Greyhounds rushing for 186 yards total on just 35 attempts. Kane Wilson got things going for the Lions as he ran in the first touchdown of the game using the Lions “Truck Package” from one yard out in the first quarter. Carandal Hale led the Lions as he rushed for 101 on 14 attempts and a touchdown. EJ Thompson was busy as well in the backfield rushing for 84 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.
The Lions jumped out early on the Greyhounds taking an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Greyhounds made a field goal right before the end of the first half to cut the lead 14-3 going into the break.
Both teams traded possessions in the third quarter before Alex Shillow intercepted ENMU quarterback Wyatt Strand setting good field position for the Lions. The Lions could not convert the turnover into points after a missed 40 yard field goal by Kristov Martinez keeping the score 14-3.
Early in the fourth ENMU made their way back into the game after a long interception return that set up a 5-yard run by Paul Terry to make the score 14-11.
Following a series of punts by both teams, Carandal Hale gave the Greyhounds the dagger running the ball in from 32 yards out to extend the lead 21-11. ENMU possessed the ball three more times in the game, but the Lions defense was too much for the Greyhounds not allowing another score.
The Lions move to 3-0 (2-0 LSC) while the Greyhounds fall 0-3 (0-1 LSC). A&M-Commerce returns home this Saturday for CommUniverCity Day as they will take on nationally ranked Colorado State-Pueblo at 6 p.m.
