The Texas A&M-Commerce Golf team started the 2017-18 season with a bang, smashing the 1996-97 school record by 15 strokes by shooting 21 under a par 843 that earned them a fourth-place finish.

The Lions were led by Senior Wilfredo Sanchez who shot 209 and was 7-under-total for the 3 rounds, squeezing into the top 10 coming in at 9th. Behind Sanchez at 12th place was newcomer Blake Hartford from Schreiner University who shot two sub-70 rounds with a 69 in the first round and a 68 in the final round.

Junior transfer Lucas McCubbin stole the spotlight by shooting an individual school record 8 under 64 in the second round.

“It feels pretty good to be a part of history here at Texas A&M-Commerce. I was just in a zone and focusing on one shot at a time, and being a competitor it always feels good to be thrown into the mix and having a chance to win the tournament,” McCubbin said.

Rounding out the Lions’ tournament total were freshman Zach Burch who finished with a 214 2-under-total and junior Garrett Landers with a 221 5-over-total.

The Lions’ finish was just short of Cameron and West Texas A&M who finished one shot ahead of the Lions with 842, 22 under totals. The Lions are out of action until the second and third of October where they compete at the Western New Mexico Fall intercollegiate in Phoenix, Arizona.
